Is there anyone else here?

Dear Bloggers Hello, are you still out there? Dear bloggers from the past, are you still around? Many have switched to Instagram, but I get the impression that some IG users have recently been leaving the platform or going into 'sleep mode.' I wonder if there is any interest in breathing new life into this platform. Instagram is slowly being dominated by AI, algorithms, and unwanted videos that are becoming increasingly annoying. I compare it to food: you have fast food and you have slow cooking. Nowadays, it seems that the faster the media, the better. Not for me, though. Artichokistan is still alive and kicking… Consider this post a trial balloon. I am eager to find out if any living soul can be found here who is looking at Blogger feed and reading posts ..we will see. So here you will find some recent works from Artichokistan...no AI, no algorithms, just Artichokistan..

We usually only see half of the tree. The other half is hidden. In the realm of darkness. However, it is just as important as the visible (above-ground) part. The root system is just as large as a tree crown. And there, in the dark depths between the roots, the fascinating life of the thousands of tiny creatures is buzzing. An ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, nematodes, mites, earthworms and other creatures. Millions of mini creatures and even up to 1 kilometer of fungal threads can easily fit into a spoonful of soil. So small but so valuable for the trees.

The tree cannot subsist without them...

And therefore an ode to the invisible second half of the tree.

Framed image of " Everything is dual...." in wooden frame made of one piece of wood for an exhibition "miniature biennale" in Soest, The Netherlands . The only condition was size of the entire artwork, max. 10 x 10 x 10 cm . The size of the drawing is ± 7 x 7 cm .

Fotoboek van Saal-digital

Op Instagram zag ik een oproep van Saal-digital om een album te mogen ontwerpen en te bestellen in ruil voor een review. Ik was op zoek naar een goede album leverancier om mijn portfolio te laten zien aan de klanten/bezoekers tijdens de exposities. Na de aanmelding kreeg ik al snel een antwoord terug met een waardebon van 40 € om een album te kunnen bestellen. 

Via de website van Saal Digital heb ik software op mijn Mac probleemloos gedownload en geïnstalleerd. Mijn keuze is gevallen op een vierkant formaat van 28 x 28 cm omdat veel van mijn werken een vierkant formaat hebben. Het software is intuïtief dus het was niet moeilijk om de juiste opties te kiezen. Het geldt niet alleen voor het formaat, de prijzen, de kleuren, mat/glans, aantal pagina’s ed. maar ook voor het ontwerpen van de pagina’s. 

Er zijn meerdere opties mogelijk om je pagina’s te ontwerpen: Net als bij andere aanbieders is de achtergrond aanpasbaar, kun je cliparts toevoegen en kun je uit verschillende lay-out’s kiezen. Ik heb echter voor een eigen ontwerp gekozen en ik begon met een leeg document.

Een interessante optie is de mogelijkheid om een eigen ontwerp te maken in een van de professionele programma’s zoals InDesign, Photoshop of QuarkXPress, ICC profielen en zelfs plug-in voor Adobe Photoshop CS6 en Adobe InDesign CS6 zijn te downloaden. 

Het hele proces van foto’s en tekst toevoegen tot afronden en bestellen ging probleemloos.

Na 8 dagen stond postbode met het fotoalbum voor de deur. Het regende erg hard en de kartonnen verpakking was nat geworden. Gelukkig was het product in plastic geseald en bovendien was het nog in een zachte plastic hoes ingepakt wat voldoende bescherming bood. 

Het eerste wat opvalt is de gewatteerde en in leer uitgevoerde cover in de kleur cognac. Ik heb gekozen voor een eenvoudige tekst in licht grijze kleur. De afwerking en opdruk is goed. Zelf ontworpen schutbladeren voor en achter vormen mooie eenheid met de cover. De keuze om mat papier te kiezen lag voor de hand omdat al mijn werk wordt afgedrukt op mat papier. Kleurweergave en de scherpte is goed. Vergeleken met het origineel zijn afdrukken in het album klein beetje donkerder maar gelukkig is de doortekening in de donkerste partijen nog goed en loopt het niet dicht. Ik denk dat het aan de kalibratie van mijn scherm ligt. Volgende keer kan ik er mee rekening houden. 

Conclusie:

Ik heb al paar keer bij verschillende aanbieders een fotoalbum besteld. Deze was tot nu toe het beste. 

Prijs /kwaliteit verhouding is goed. Afwerking van de cover is zeer goed. Optie om geen QR code te laten printen is zeer welkom. 5 euro is misschien beetje te veel voor niks printen ;) 

Het album zoals ik had samengesteld - gewatteerd lederen cover in kleur cognac met opdruk, geen QR code achter, mat papier beviel me zeer goed. Volgende keer wil ik nog een fotoalbum met alleen zwart-witte foto’s proberen. 

Er zijn echter paar punten die ik onder aandacht wil brengen: 

- Meer keuzemogelijkheden qua papiersoorten - (huidige mat papier vind ik niet echt mat) 

- Ik kon geen pagina nummers als standaard optie vinden. Ontbreek dat of is het ergens verborgen? 

- Schutblad standaard toevoegen of duidelijk vermelden dat men er rekening mee moet houden. 

- De bestelstatus van je zending kan je goed volgen, maar alleen op het grondgebied van Duitsland. Daarna ontbreekt alle informatie. Dat is jammer.

The Thinker Thinks Again

Rodin’s The Thinker, along with six other bronze statues, was stolen from the sculpture garden of Singer Laren, The Netherlands on January 17, 2007. (The thieves have stolen the statues because of the high price of bronze!!) A few days later was the statue found. With brutal cuts in the head and one of the upper arms, plus a piece of leg disappeared, The Thinker was heavily damaged. They tried to cut the statue into the smaller (and not recognizable) salable pieces......

Today I visited exhibition "The Thinker Thinks Again" dedicated to process of restoration of the Thinker, in Singer Museum, Laren, The Netherlands. It proved to be a dramatic difficult operation, which took one and half year. A very impressive exhibition showing the long and complicated restoration step by step.

Pencils art by Dalton Ghetti

A Brazilian-born artist Dalton Ghetti carves sculptures out of the tips of pencils using sewing needle and razor blade. Each of these sculptures takes months to years to complete as he works for about an hour and a half a day. It took Dalton about two and half years to complete his best-known work, "Alphabet" a set of 26 pencils with each letter of the alphabet carved into the tip of the graphite.
